China has been the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with consistent growth rates of around 10% over the past 30 years. In 2010 it surpassed Japan to become the world’s second largest economy only after the United States. Earlier this year, IMF announced that China will surpass the US economically in real terms in 2016 – a mere five years from now.
As a consequence to economic growth, China’s urban areas are changing fundamentally. People are seeking work and opportunities in the cities leading to mass migration. Today, Shanghai is home to more than 23 million people – up from only 13 million in 1990.
This photograph was captured during my first visit to China in 2004, and shows the view from Jin Mao Tower, an 88-story landmark skyscraper in the Lujiazui area of the Pudong district of Shanghai.
